Bridging Generations: Kothmale West Celebrates World Children’s Day and International Day of Older Persons

On October 1, 2025, the Kothmale West Divisional Secretariat witnessed a beautiful convergence of wisdom and innocence. In concurrent celebration of the National World Children’s Day and the International Day of Older Persons, a heartwarming commemorative programme was organized across the Early Childhood Development Centres (ECDCs) within our divisional secretariat.

This unique initiative focused on intergenerational bonding, allowing our senior citizens to share their rich life experiences, traditional stories, and values with the younger generation, creating a meaningful dialogue between the past and the future.

"Protect with Love – For Us to Conquer the World"

This year’s celebrations were guided by the powerful national theme declared by the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs:

"Protect with Love – For Us to Conquer the World" (ආදරෙන් සුරකින්න - අපට ලොව දිනන්නට)

The theme emphasizes that a foundation of love, security, and proper guidance is essential for children to reach their maximum potential and grow into global leaders of tomorrow.

Highlights of the Day

The Early Childhood Development Centres came alive with vibrant activities designed to foster mutual respect and affection between the elders and the children:

  • Storytelling and Wisdom Sharing: Elders passed down valuable life lessons and cultural heritage through engaging storytelling sessions.
  • Creative Performances: The children delighted the elders with songs, dances, and small tokens of appreciation, spreading joy and laughter.
  • Interactive Activities: Traditional games and simple collaborative activities helped bridge the age gap, creating unforgettable memories for both generations.

Nurturing a Compassionate Community

By bringing the elderly and children together, the Kothmale West Divisional Secretariat aims to build a society deeply rooted in empathy, respect, and mutual care. Protecting our children and honoring our elders remain core values of our community development agenda.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs, the dedicated preschool teachers, the participating elders, and our field officers who worked tirelessly to make this dual celebration a resounding success.
